Every painting is a field. That was the Baroque mindset: every canvas, every stone slab upon which a painting is created, is a field to be plowed, potentially rich in harvest. Just as the soil itself, into which seeds are sown, the surface of the painting was also regarded as a place where futures could be laid out. Such thinking also encompasses violence, for with every image created in this way, a part of the earth is taken and placed in a different context; every image involves appropriation and interpretation. This gives rise to an interplay of forces, a metabolism, and a range of responses that extend far beyond human action. For what do I know of the silver used to depict the moon, or of the stones upon which the images were created? On October 1, 1920, Greater Berlin was founded, and Wannsee emerged as an official district of the new metropolis. Taking this date as its starting point, the exhibition reinterprets the constellations of the celestial bodies at that moment and brings them down to the ground in Wannsee in 2026.
